Why we’re a best place to work: people over perks

|Catie Maillard

Outbrain is thrilled to be one of the best places to work in New York (according to both my mother and Crain’s New York Business– though both hold equal weight). This is the first time we’re on this list, and we’re anxiously awaiting the award ceremony in December to see where we fall!

I could use this blog to tout our great perks as the reason why we made this list. And yes, we totally have weekly catered lunches, free gym memberships, a robust learning & development program, and the random quirky perks (did someone mention a snack closet?) that litter the career pages of startups worldwide. But perks are…perks, and though they’re nice, I don’t think they truly are what make us a great place to work, and I’m not alone.

According to Gallup’s 2013 State of the American Workforce Report, perks are no substitute for engagement. Gallup measures engagement by focusing in on 12 workplace elements (ex: I have a best friend at work, my opinions seem to count), and the majority of these elements focus on an individual’s interactions with his or her manager and co-workers. It’s the people, not the policies or perks, that lead to engagement.

So, why are we a great place to work? Because we’re ‘Outbrainy,’ of course.  You’re probably wondering what that means.  Read on.

We read everything we can get our hands on (hence the smattering of eye glasses you’ll see in our photos). We work to create an ego-free zone, where we treat each other as equals and talk to each other like people, not titles. We’re global – walk around the office and you’ll see and hear the impact of having offices in over 11 countries on 5 continents (some days the kitchen feels like the UN). We’re frenetically relaxed – unabashedly nerdy and hardworking, but at the same time, chill and calm. And we are honestly some of the most helpful people I’ve ever met. When I first started at Outbrain, I thought people were placating my non-stop questions because I was new, and they were nice. But, the questions never stopped, and the response never changed. It’s like everyone’s read Give & Take!

Don’t just take my word for it, though –see us in action! Meet Natalie, our Senior Marketing Manager who can give you her take on our culture; Cody, our Fullstack Engineer who honestly loves talking about ways to use our data (and our beer cart); and Lior, our Product Manager who’ll tell you how to get hired here (please disregard the popped collar in his larger photo).

We’re Outbrain. We’re award-winningly awesome. And, oh yeah, we’re hiring!
