Which players won the online game of content in the months leading up to the World Cup 2014?

With the FIFA World Cup 2014 kicking off last week across Brazil, we grabbed the chance to look at the players and teams most written and read about online.

Specifically, we counted up and compared all the articles written and pages viewed across our global network of over 100,000 sites during the 3-month run up to the Cup. And among our findings?

– Around the world, Spanish players were the most read about, with Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta taking the top three slots. Although that didn’t help them in the game last night.

– French players have won people’s interest around the globe, but it’s the Spanish who have shown interest in the cup games like no other nation. Looks like they were hoping for a repeat of their previous win.
